Birding By Ear

It was hard today to know if there were any birds about, there were, if you listened, lots of corvids but i couldn’t see many, but I could hear four different species of crow. The fog that covered the Shipley was somewhat eerie, I could actually hear Goldcrest, a species that at my age is difficult, in fact anything that sounds like an high-end tweeter is getting difficult unless conditions are just right, IE. no wind, no traffic noise etc.

Thanks to a few very willing subjects around feeders in the small nature reserve at Mapperley I thought I’d try out a few tip regarding ISO settings on the camera. So, at settings between ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 and lots of focal length, I gave it a whirl. With the fog and the un-helpful light, I wasn’t expecting much, but things turned out better than I thought, i can almost see where I’m going now with this photography !

Shipley Wood. 30 Lesser Redpoll. 5 Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush, Sparrow Hawk. Mapperley NR. Great Spotted Woodpecker, Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest. 25 Redwing, 3 Fieldfare.
